Michelangelo Wine Awards 2016

Slanghoek Cellar, situated along the picturesque Breedekloof Wine Route, has added four high-profile accolades to its growing tally of wine awards accrued in 2016: Two Gold and two Silver medals from the internationally acclaimed Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.

Wines entered into this competition are judged by a panel of esteemed local and international judges, who taste the wines blind and adjudicate according to the international 100-point system. A highly competitive awards system, the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards competition receive between 1700 and 1800 entries yearly, with wines only awarded a medal if they fall within the top-scoring one-third of entries received.

Showcasing its ability to produce off-dry and sweet wines of a distinct calibre, Slanghoek Cellar claimed Gold Medals for its Slanghoek Private Selection Crème de Chenin 2014 and Slanghoek Vin Doux Sparkling Wine NV respectively, as well as Silver Medals for its Slanghoek Cape Ruby 2016 and Slanghoek Red Muscadel 2016.

The Slanghoek Private Selection Crème de Chenin 2014 is an elegant, natural sweet wine made from predominantly Chenin Blanc grapes. According to Cellarmaster at Slanghoek Cellar, Pieter Carstens, “this wine has a refreshingly sweet and crisp palate with a fruity bouquet and a lingering aftertaste that displays a hint of botrytis”. The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Gold Medal, is one more award that this particular Natural Sweet has added to a long list of awards, with it recently also being awarded Double Gold at the consumer-driven Vitis Vinifera Awards – an award which also reflects the popularity it is currently enjoying among some of Cape Town’s top sommeliers.

Slanghoek Cellar also claimed a Gold Medal for its Slanghoek Vin Doux Sparkling Wine, an aromatic, sweet wine well-tempered by a crisp acidity and refreshing finish. Comments Carstens: “this is a delicious Sparkling Wine that is especially suited to warm summer months, and a fine example of how a finely balanced wine can win over even the toughest crowd”.

He concludes: “Slanghoek Cellar’s recent performance in the 20th annual Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, is testament to the fact that we are continuously building our reputation as a cellar which provides wine enthusiasts with top class drinking, no matter which wine variety we use or the style it is made in.”
